The Race
The riders set off individually in reverse order according to the General Classification, which meant Khariyn Battoyrog got the day rolling.
Image: Battoyrog is the race’s back-marker, so had the ‘pleasure and privilege’ of starting first in today’s time trial.
The course was essentially flat, with only one small ascent mid-stage. The only points to be fought for were those to be awarded at the end of the stage for the winner and runner-up: 2 and 1 pts, respectively. Going into the stage, the two Blue Mountain riders held a significant lead over the field and this was unlikely to change after the conclusion of this stage.
The early pace was set by the Sprinteurs from Team Camargue and Racing Green who stayed out front until the course began to turn for home. At this stage in the race, Bianchi began to fade slightly and Rhys Coch moved up alongside Frankie Moss. Meanwhile Hansie Pienk of Rose Racers was having a torrid time and fell way off the rear of the peloton.
Bianchi and Moss set the pace.
Head of the race gains riders.
Pienk struggles, while Coch shines.
Approaching the finishing line it looked for the world as if Frankie Moss was going to take the stage just ahead of Rhys Coch. However, from nowhere Coch was able to dig deep and find a final burst of speed to seal the victory. Moss was able to hold off the chasers to secure second spot. Moss and Groen both take 2 exhaustion into the next stage. As this was a time trial, no Combativity Award was made.
And the stage winner is ...
